The venue of the festival generally rotates among the four regions of Ujjain, Nashik, Allahabad and Haridwar. Haridwar is situated on the banks of the Ganges river which is also considered the most holy river according to the Hindu mythologies.
Haridwar is in the center of the Hindu religion and all the religion’s festivals are celebrated in this part of the country very grandly. This has been the case for many many years now. From all around the world, people come to this city for the purpose of pilgrimage. Some devotees even make it a point to visit this holy place at least once a year. The last time Kumbh Mela took place, the number of people who turned out in this festival was close to 70 million. The festival is supposed to take place again in the year 2013. Hindu festivals starting from Kanwar Mela to Somwati Amavasya are celebrated here, and that too, very impressively. The Sawan month which falls in the month of July in the English calendar is probably that time of the year when you should avoid visiting this city. This time of the year sees a huge number of tourists and it gets really difficult to find a vacant room or even transport means to travel across the city. Delhi which is India’s national capital is located at a distance of around 200 kilometers. Buses and trains are available between these two cities at regular intervals. The neighbouring regions of Jaipur and Dehradun are also properly connected with this very sacred city of India. There are trains that ply to Rishikesh too. Dehradun has its own airport which is located at a distance of 20 approximately kilometers from Haridwar. This airport is better known as Jolly Grant Airport. Buses and taxis are easily available that will take you from this airport to the holy city.
Haridwar has its own railway station which is called Haridwar Junction Railway Station. Most of the hotels in the city are placed nearby to the railway station making it easier for tourists and guests. Haridwar also has a number of shops from where you can buy souvenirs for your friends and family back home.
